Hazen (Communal Mourning)

Hazen (communal mourning) describes the important cultural practice where Eritreans gather to mourn the death of a loved one while providing support and comfort to one another. Eritreans gather together in the days before the funeral, attend the burial, and conclude the hazen period by having a meal together immediately following the funeral. Close family members and friends continue to visit the family of the lost loved one in the family home.

The Eritrean American Community Association of GA informs the Community when a death occurs and provides Eritreans in metropolitan Atlanta a place to gather and comfort one another in the event of a death in the Community.
